Shannon's Weekly Okinawa Review

17 January 2005

On Saturday we went to our Japanese friends' house for a traditional new baby celebration. I made a friend named Saaya. There is a type of food we made called Muchi! First you have to mix dough - it's a lot of hard work! Molly and I made the most! Once you mix up the dough, you put it on this huge leaf, fold it in a certain way and then you tie it up. As soon as you've folded a lot - you have to steam it. I just like making it - I don't like eating it! You then give the Muchi to all your relatives. Even though we don't know that much Japanese, and they didn't know that much English, we really had fun playing together!
Bye!

I found out all of your names in Japanese! Here they are. I have a Japanese friend named Saaya who helped me. I also take two classes, Japanese language and culture. I even know how to use the Japanese calculator! Anyways, here are your names:

On New Year's Day, we did something very different! We went to a Shinto shrine! Near the shrine, there were games, food and mini shops! I won a soccer ball by playing one of the games! At the shrine, they have an old Japanese New Year's tradition. After paying ¥100, you get your fortune told for the coming year. If it's a bad fortune, the tradition is to fold it up and tie it to a wall with all the other bad fortunes. All our fortunes were good ones! You would love it! Unfortunately, it only happens at New Years though.

This was our first Christmas in Okinawa! We all got more than we wanted! To our surprise, our grandparents gave us some money and we got to buy a baby Maltese! Her name is Maggie May. We will get her in February. She is so cute! I got a sewing machine and some Bratz dolls. I got the Bratz Sushi-go-round bar which is just like a Sushi-go-round near Camp Lester, where we live. Molly got a Bratz doll and a new microphone for her Karaoke machine! Joey got the Game Cube he wanted and we all got to share a new TV! Bye! Happy Holidays from Okinawa!

In Okinawa, in many places around the water you will find a sea wall. You find sea walls all around the island! A bunch of excellent graffitti is all on it! We took a bunch of pictures of the art work. It is beautiful! If you ever come to Okinawa, go by the sea and check out the beautiful pictures. Take a look at some of these:

Soda machines in Okinawa are everywhere! If you ever bring change off base, wherever you step there is a soda machine! They have sodas such as Coke and Fanta and you can even find coffee and tea. I even got to get White Strawberry Fanta! It was incredible! Sodas cost about 100-150 Yen. Joe collects the thingys off the tops of the cans - he already has about 260 of them. If you come to Okinawa, you will be amazed at how many soda machines there are.
Bye!

Driving in Okinawa is weird. You have to drive on the left side of the road! Your steering wheel is on the right side of the car! In Okinawa, they have special license plates. If you're an American, you have a "Y" plate. If you're a "senior citizen" or a "new driver" you get special stickers on the back of your car so everyone knows to look out for you. We bought a Mitsubishi Pajero and on the back of the car is a sticker that says "OBX" which stands for Outer Banks! Can you believe it was already on the car when we bought it??? If you ever come to Okinawa, look out for the motorcycle drivers - they're really loud and crazy!

There is a friend of ours named David Dalton.  He is such a nice guy!  He is a Navy Corpsman who works at the hospital and he is from Dublin, Ireland!  He is a single guy, but still is very friendly, funny, and like I said, so nice!  He is such a great person!  On Saturday, he's taking us to see "the Incredibles".  And if you are reading right now David, I just want to say "thanks".  Thanks for being you!
See ya!

Okuma is awesome! We stayed there for a week in a house on the beach. You can rent bikes, go-carts and you can even play Putt-Putt. It is great, but try to avoid these things:
1. Try not to get a room by North Beach - it is like a sand storm over there!
2. Don't get the cabins either - they don't have any bathrooms!
3. Don't go on Banana Boats if you have a cast on your arm (like Molly did)!
4. Don't go to North Beach, period! (you can try)

The Southeast Botanical Garden is a very cool place. They have giftshops, restaurants, crafts and just about everything! The gardens are beautiful. There is also a tree house. I got lost in the forest! I also got to hold animals such as Prairie Dogs and Butterflies. A few of the birds tried to snap at me! (It was great). There was this guy that played some kind of flute. We bought one! He even played a home-made flute he had made out of a broom! If you come here, you will love it. We did!

My brother, sister and I all attend Killen Elementary School in Okinawa. I am in 4th grade. My teacher's name is Mr. Santoro. I am in choir too! On December 13th and 14th our choir is singing Christmas songs for our Christmas concert. If you ever come and visit Okinawa, I'll be there. Wish me luck!

In Okinawa, Japan, there are a lot of bases. I live on Camp Lester which is a Marine Base. Right outside of Camp Lester is a Japanese place (of course!) called American Village. It is a great place. It has a ferris wheel, a movie theater, a lot of restaurants and pretty much everything! It is a great place to hang out. One place in American Village is called Dragon Palace. Dragon Palace has candy for ¥10 (10 yen=about 10 cents) and it's good candy too! Just remind yourself, if you ever visit Okinawa - remember to go to American Village.
